B-T History

Let’s divide their entire career (and their plethora of albums) by sound.

The 80’s period:

They released 4 albums during this period, Hurry Up Mode, SEXUALXXX!, Seventh Heaven and TABOO.

The sound of these albums is very playful but with a kind of mischief/impish edge, lots of sexual innuendo and edgier themes but with a playful nature.

Seventh Heaven stands out for being their first concept album as well as well as the only concept album of this period. It has a very ‘airy’ feel plus it has the most poppish songs of all the albums in this period. Many great songs are here with great melody, very accessible.

TABOO and SEXUALXXX! are the most edgy and the most ‘dark’, especially TABOO with a lot of sexual themes (very risque for its time).

Hurry Up Mode is their first album and is similar in sound and tone with SEXUALXXX!, it has a lot of gems in there as well…B-T were in their early 20’s when this was recorded (21-22) so expected to be playful and full of impish mischief.

There was also a mini album call ROMANESQUE, has a very SEXUALXXX! vibe.

I recommend SEXUALXXX! or Seventh Heaven as a start for this era.

EARLY 90’s:

This is when it starts to get really good, this era have great albums like AKU no HANA, Kurattu Taiyo, Koroshi no shirabe~this is not greatest hits~, and Darker then Darkness.

Aku no Hana is a very awesome album, very influential ( I think many Jrock bands were influenced by this album). It still retains that Impish Mischief playfulness of the previous album, but far more mature and enigmatic. Highly recommended.

Kurattu Taiyo is also a very good album, this release was very different then what they were doing before. It’s a lot more serious, very epic and dark. You can see how B-T’s sound starts evolving with this album. Has some of the best singles from their early 90’s period, so it’s very accessible!

Darker then Darkness….HELLOOO DARKNESS! This is when B-T gets really dark and this album sets the precedent for many albums to come! Where as the previous albums were more playful and light, this album is dark with no playfulness. I recommend it for it’s harder sound and edge.

Koroshi no shirabe ~this is NOT the greatest hits~ was technically a self-cover album where B-T completely re-arranged their songs and made them into almost completely different songs. It has some of their most popular songs to date and it’s very accessible and I highly recommend it. Very goo album to start, especially for the early years.

MID-90’s:

This period is probably the darkest in terms of the sound, thematically dark. This is also my favorite Era of B-T in their entire career! If you like darkness, this is the period to go with! This period is also when Sakurai’s voice starts to get very deep and sultry as well as mysterious ans sensual!

SIX/NINE is an excellent album, has some of their hardest songs ever and lots of dark themes but on a more abstract sort of way where the dark themes are more enigmatic. The medium tempo songs are also excellent and this album is also very eclectic with many different style of songs and sounds. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

COSMOS: This album is one of my favorite of ALL TIME, excellent album with a very mysterious and abstract feel to it, very dark in theme and it has some urban edge to it. Overall one of their best albums to date with Sakurai’s best vocals, Imai also truly shines here. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

SEXY STREAM LINER is probably the most sexual and perverted album B-T has done to date. The album is very sexual with many sexual and drug themes and the album can be outrageous (especially in the latter half). B-T at its most PROVOCATIVE and the album has a very electronic sound. The songs themselves are utmost excellent with true edge, one of my favorite albums and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

Some singles were also released that never made it to any albums during is time and I recommend them highly! MIU, BRAN-NEW LOVER and Gessekai are EXCELLENT singles!

POST-2000:

This era is also a favorite of mine (my second favorite after the MID-90s). This is when they start releasing CONCEPT albums, with each album having a central them and a story that is being told.

ONE LIFE, ONE DEATH: This is one amazing and excellent album, one of B-T’s best albums to date. Now this album is still dark and jaded like the previous 3 albums, however this album has a far more STYLISH and GLAMOROUS feel. The songs have a similar electro-rock feel to it like SSL did and are very catchy. IMAI also stands out here as well with both guitars and his very unique back up vocals. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

Kyokoutoo I LOVE YOU: This is probably B-T’s most melancholic and most depressing album ever! The first two songs are the only songs with an upbeat tempo, and then the album starts to get really depressing and sad. It a very excellent album with some great songs, but it’s so depressing that in IMO it’s good for certain occasions. Nevertheless yet another AMAZING album by B-T with many excellent songs. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

MONA LISA Overdrive: This is a very good album, but it’s also my least favorite in the POST-2000 era. The album is very electro-rock and has many good fast-tempo and aggressive/violent themes which I love. My only problem is that this album is missing something, like it’s trying to be SSL but nowhere reaches the greatness of that album. Not too mention that by this time the electro-rock sound is kind of getting tire and redundant. It’s still a very good album, but it’s one of B-T’s weakest album ever.

and that is why B-T went with this!

13ikai wa Gekkou: This album is another good one, B-T gets into a more GOTHIC DARK sound which despite being done by other Jrock bands in the 90’s…B-T never touched this type of sound UNTIL NOW! Very good album with a gothic sound and quite an interesting story (so it’s another concept album). It’s quite the refreshing sound from B-T.

Also try KAGEROU single which was never released on any album and fits with 13ikai wa Gekkou quite well.

And finally TENSHI no REVOLVER which was reviewed above is an excellent album and blends the JADED DARKNESS of previous years with the IMPISH MISCHIEF of B-T’s early years. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!
